Kailua Girl Wins Miss Aloha Hula

Congratulations to Kailua girl Rebecca Sterling... actually Rebecca Lilinoekekapahauomaunakea Sterling ...for winning the highly competitve Miss Aloha Hula title at the Merrie Monarch Festival, the Olympics of Hula.

Rebecca Lilinoekekapahauomaunakea Sterling, of Halau Mohala Ilima, was crowned Miss Aloha Hula at the Merrie Monarch festival last Thursday night.

For her kahiko selection, Sterling performed He Inoa No Kaleimakalii and for the auana number, He Inoa No Na Keiki O Ka Bana Lahui. (note:  Kahiko is the old, traditional Hula; Auana is the "new Hula"  -- the one visitors are most used to seeing).

Kumu Hula of the Oahu halau is Mapuana de Silva. (another note:  Kumu Hula means "(wise) teacher of Hula,"; and a Halau is the group of Hula dancers she teaches).
