Da Kine Doggie Day in Kailua Today 9/6/09

Last year we had over 1,000 people and 500 dogs there," said John Harmon, co-founder of Island Dog Magazine. "People enjoyed the day by hanging out with their dogs, meeting dog people and visiting the information booths.

"Most people don't know how dog-friendly Kailua is. There's actually a fountain built into the plaza outside of California Pizza Kitchen and it has a dog watering station and a mosaic of one of the dogs owned by Harold K. L. Castle. He used to drive his dogs in the backseat of his convertible from Kane'ohe."

There are two purposes for the festival. Island Dog Magazine wants everyone to discover the many areas available to walk your dog in Kailua, and also help local rescue shelters (Oahu SPCA, Friends for Life and the Hawaiian Humane Society) with a pet supply drive.

To help kick off the drive, Petco and Pet's Discount will donate more than 200 pounds of pet food each.

Donations from the list below are greatly appreciated:

Fun, games and even a pet psychic
Besides booths displaying pet services and the latest products, there will be a costume contest, doggie games, live entertainment and a Cocojor fashion show for dogs. A pet psychic will also be there!

Costume contest participants will parade around Kailua Town Center led by Hana Boy, mascot of Mike McKenna's Windward Ford.

Dogs must be leashed
Please keep your dog leashed at all times. Your dog should also be current on vaccinations, have proper identification and be well-socialized. And of course, please remember to pick up after your pet.

It promises to be a fun event for the entire family!
