It Takes A Village

To catch a dog- (the saga of Brook and Dave's lab-heeler mix Oreo and her escape on a rainy day).
SATURDAY
6 am- 4 pm
STORMING all day in Hawaii. We are in the house ALL MORNING. ALL AFTERNOON.
Poor Oreo I think. Dave is in town. I should take her out.
4pm
Saturday late afternoon. Weather starts clearing up. Still raining a little and water everywhere.
4:15
I feel sorry for Oreo- think “Okay- I’ll take her to the park to walk- I’ll clean her up afterwards.”
4:20-5 pm
Walk her around the park, kind of muddy but she’s clean and having a good time.
5:05
The leash comes off somehow.
5:06
Oreo is free.
5:05-5:30
I call and chase to no avail. She races around the park, digs holes in the mud in the baseball park. I chase. Bait her with slippers, shoes, keys, my car door open. She runs, races. I get close. Chasing a greased pig. Don’t have my phone but grateful she is staying in the park and figure she will get tired. I continue to try to trap her.
5:35
Oreo runs into the parking lot of Aikahi school. I continue to cajole knowing that the street is right there.
5:45
Lady walking her old poodle comes to help. Oreo approaches her dog but runs when I get close.
5:46
Oreo runs into the street.
5:47
Teenage boy who has been mudsliding in Aikahi park comes to help me alert cars and try to keep Oreo from going into the intersection. He and the poodle lady help me keep Oreo from running into traffic.
5:50
Oreo runs into Safeway parking lot. We continue to try to chase her down. Prevent her from going onto main highway.
5:55
Rest of teenagers from mudsliding event come across the street to join us. Circle Oreo. She continues to evade all of us.
5:58
Wackenhut guard at Safeway starts doing the jig to get Oreo’s attention and moonwalking across the parking lot to KEEP Oreo’s attention so we can come up from behind.
6 pm
Oreo runs.
6:05
Oreo getting tired. Mudsliders continue to circle. Wackenhut guard sits and watches, blocks entry to parking lot.
Oreo lays down to rest- but just for a second til mudsliding girl tries to grab her. Everyone continues to circle and get her into corner.
6:07
Dave and Doug arrive after searching for me at Aikahi Park. Oreo does not listen to Dave either!
6:10
Group continues to circle Oreo. Oreo is grabbed by SWEET TEENAGE GIRL!!!!! YAY!!!!
Everyone cheers including Wackenhut guard and poodle lady and ME.
6:15
We cross the street to get back to park (and kids to mudsliding) but not before taking a picture of Oreo and her peeps. See below. And yes, Oreo is going to obedience school. And yes again- thank goodness for good hearts in good people.

From Farmers Market to Hekili Street

Soon to open on Hekili Street, next to Cisco's and in the spot occupied nearly forever by Princess Chop Suey, is Crepes No Ka Oi.

To date, they have been very successful at farmer's markets and various events around the island of O'ahu, and they are finally (especially for those of us who are crepes fans) opening a restaurant in Kailua.

Kailua, which has always been too cool to be true, adds another great place to eat, and remains the coolest Hawaiian town there is. Lanikai Bath and Body welcomes
Crepes No Ka Oi to the wonderful mix that is Kailua town!

Our Ingredients Speak for Themselves

Kukui Oil is one of the most important ingredients in our made-by-hand-in-Maui natural product lines. The Hawaiians discovered long ago that the oil from the kukui nut made skin soft and supple, and could also be lit to light the way on a dark night.

The foliage of the Kukui Tree is silver-grey, and looks somewhat powdery. It is the lightest "green" of the multitudes of green in Hawaii, and so the tree is easily spotted. Before the nuts, small white colored flowers bloom.

Most everyone associates Kukui with lei that are made with ribbons and nuts polished to a dark brown shine. But its softening effects are what is important to us at Lanikai Bath and Body, and it helps to make our lotions smooth and silky.

In 1959 the Kukui nut tree became the official state tree of Hawaii. It's classified name is aleurites moluccana. Since scientists have found traces of Kukui pollen in ancient geological deposits, it is assumed by many that the Kukui nut tree is native to Hawaii.

Hawaii Boy Is President-Elect!

The whole world knows this by now, but we just had to say it! Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii, went to Noelani Elementary School in Manoa, and to Punahou School in Makiki. And if you've read this blog you know I "taught" him in 5th grade.

The world knows Barack as an African American but here in Hawaii we know he is hapa haole, or half white. Practically everyone here has mixed race members in their family, and no one spends too much time thinking about it.

We do acknowledge that this is a historic moment for African Americans and people of color everywhere. We are so proud of President Elect Obama!

The picture here shows hula dancers from Obama City Japan (Obama means "little beach"
in Japanese). According to reports from Japan "Yes We Can Obama!" was shouted by Japanese men and women in hula-dance costumes on national television. They’re members of possibly the most ardent of Barack Obama supporters in Japan, a small fishing town in western Japan with a population of 32,000 which shares the same name as the new president-elect.

After Obama’s election victory, it seemed like every Japanese television network descended on the town of Obama to capture the jubilation of residents celebrating with their Hawaiian-themed dancing and singing (a tribute to Obama’s birthplace) and hoping that their tie to the ever-popular next president of the United States will boost local business and tourism."
